Mexico Purges Police Force
"Mexico fired nearly one-tenth of its entire Federal Police force en masse for failing lie-detector tests, being suspected of corruption, or for other reasons—a major blow to efforts to fight drug-trafficking gangs."10%? that is incredible...

2) #1 vs. #2 matchup and the last game of the regular season
3) Anti-vietnam protests
4) Anti-segregation protests (this was the last all white championship team)
5) Billy Graham gave the pre-game prayer
6) Future president George Bush was there with Nixon
7) Darrell Royal went for 2 because he didnt want a tie
8) Freddie Steinmark, starting DB for UT, actually had his leg amputated just a week later b/c of cancer
9) Darrell Royal calling for a deep pass on 4th and 3 to the tight end (in the 4th quarter)
10) It was the 100th aniversary of college football

Gaga
"Tin-Shi Tam, Iowa State University carillonneur and associate professor of music and theatre, performed Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” on the carillon at noon on Aug. 27, 2010. Brad Riley, senior in journalism and mass communication, started a Facebook group and asked people to send Tam emails requesting that she play the song."

antoine dodson
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzNhaLUT520
is this youtube video of antoine dodson racist and/or offensive?
i personally really like the video, and i like the song even better. it never even occured to me that it could be racist or offensive. on further thought, however, i could see the issues....
what we have in antoine dodson is the perfect storm. he's black, he's poor, he's under-educated and probably gay. i still dont think that the video is offensive, because in the end, i think that most people LIKE antoine dodson as opposed get sickened by him (as opposed to people cringing while watching 2 men kiss). the man is one sassy individual.
the more difficult issue, however, is of the attempted rape. would this video be as popular as it is if a black man tried to get into bed with some blonde white girl? i think in that context, people would have been really outraged that someone created a funny song out of the event, but since it was just some poor black woman, who cares.
i personally would still find the video entertaining if it was some blonde girl, so i think im in the clear!

wow, so douchey
Earlier this morning, a 17-year-old girl fell to her death from the 25th floor of a building on West 34th Street. The victim is identified as Nicole John, the daughter of the U.S. Ambassador to Thailand, Eric John. The Daily News reports that she "fell out of a 25th story window of the Herald Square Towers on W. 34th St., landing on the building's third-floor overhang, according to police sources. She was killed instantly."
The incident occurred at 4:15 a.m. and it's believed that she and a group of other people were partying. The building engineer told the News, "They'd been drinking. They'd invited some other people back from a club." NY1 reports that they had been at Tenjune and "According to sources, a 25-year-old man has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child" (the News says someone was seen in handcuffs leaving the building with police).
The News adds that some witnesses told the cops that Nicole John may have been "leaning out of the window for some fresh air when she tipped forward and fell."

Tribute to AMC Studio 30
During my high school days, my weekends typically went like this:
Go to restaurant, go watch movie at AMC 30.
Sometimes it went play ping-pong, go to restaurant, go watch movie at AMC 30.
Here are the movies I recall watching there:
Any Given Sunday - I think Diane vomitted during this movie
The Bone Collector - Adam Lebovitz said it might be "the next Silence of the Lambs"
Erin Brockovich - Andrea lost $10 to me on this one when she bet me that Sheryl Crow wouldnt be on the sountrack. Thank you ending credits!
Gladiator - Just walked out thinking "man i hate ridley scott and russell crowe"
Gone in 60 seconds - I can't believe I even watched this. Of course, it was only like $5.50 back then with student ID
Shaft - What a dissapointment. Whole movie came down to one line "its my duty to please that booty"
Rush Hour - I remember the theater being half black and half asian. Reminded me of gym class
South Park - Bought the soundtrack and listened to it the entire summer
Sleepy Hollow - This was at a midnight showing after a debate tournament. Only movie i've fallen asleep at
Lord of the Rings - Watched it with Andrea. Don't remember exactly which one. I did leave 30 minutes early though to catch Survivor (this was pre-DVR)
American Beauty: One of the few movies I ever watched at AMC 30 that I actually liked
10 Things I Hate About You: We talked during the movie. Jenny got really upset at us
Star Wars (Episode 1 i think) - While waiting in line for the first (midnight) showing, Lingo called up Jason to have him deliver us a pizza (for free). Note that Lingo did not have an extra ticket for him
Romeo Must Die/Mission Impossible 2: Skipped school (with Vinh) to go watch both of these movies. Both were terrible. I never skipped class again
Magnolia: Some of us liked it. Some of us hated it. Let's just leave it at that
Mission to Mars: All of us hated it
The Matrix: I only remember many nerds in line. Some of those nerds are probably hipsters now
Entrapment: Many snickers when Sean Connery recited his infamous line
Boogie Nights: This might've been the first movie I ever watched at AMC 30...

Texas vs. USC
Break out The University of Spoiled Children t-shirts!
Texas will play at USC on Sept. 16, 2017. USC will come to Royal-Memorial Stadium on Sept. 15, 2018.
The two schools have played each other five times, with Texas winning only once —- though it was a big one: the 2005 BCS national championship game, 41-38.
“USC vs. Texas is a classic matchup, and I’m sure fans from both schools, as well as all college football fans, will look forward to these games with much anticipation,” USC athletic director Pat Haden said in a statement. “It’s been a long time since USC has played Texas in the regular season, and of course we all remember how exciting the recent bowl game meeting was between the teams.”

How about Lucille Larusso, mother of Daniel Larusso, The Karate Kid!
Leo Lover
On his (Ron Artest's) favorite movie:
"Titanic. When DiCaprio is trying to save the young lady, that was dope. When she tries to save him, and he dies, that was dope too. That whole situation was tragic. When I saw the baby in the water, frozen? I cried a little, but mostly I was pissed. I’d just had my daughter, so when I saw that frozen baby, I was like, “what the f*ck!? That’s bull sh*t!” And let’s not forget about Celine Dion. That woman is unbelievable. You know how much I love my music. Well I wouldn’t put out a song for 10 years if that meant I could put out a song with her. Her voice sounds like pure fresh air. It sounds like what it sounded like when the world was created."

Audiobooks
http://www.booksshouldbefree.com
I recently listened to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo audiobook and thought it was a pretty good way to get through a book.
Pros - Can listen as you walk or bike. Can listen while you are in bed.
Cons - I am a visual learner so I had to "rewind" frequently. It is much slower than reading.

Gentrification takes another victim. A yuppie, organic ice cream store??
"The rising rents of Atlantic Avenue have claimed another victim: Blue Marble Ice Cream, whose flagship store opened at 420 Atlantic Avenue back in 2007, will be moving out in the coming weeks, a result of the landlord's efforts to almost double the rent. "We're very sad to leave the neighborhood, especially since this was shop our 'first-born,'" said founder Alexis Miesen in an email, "but we were left with no alternative." Ice cream fanatics need not totally despair though: Blue Marble's other stores on Court and Underhill are going strong—and you can always get a scoop at The Flea on Saturdays! You can see the $3,500-a-month listing for the new space here, though, from what we hear, 900 square feet might be overstating the case a bit." (Brownstoner)

The Situation
Ok! is reporting, and the L.A. Times confirming, that the financially set Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino will be joining Audrina Patridge and Brandy on the next season of Dancing With the Stars, where he will revolutionize the ab-displaying male dance costume. [OK]
There seems to be some type of double-standard going on with The Situation getting much love and Snooki getting none. thoughts?

Currently Reading: Gun, With Occasional Music
I am a big fan of Jonathan Lethem (probably it is that whole Brooklyn thing). I really enjoyed Motherless Brooklyn, Chronic City and Fortress of Solitude so now I am reading Gun, With Occasional Music
Something I noticed is how infrequently he uses "SAT" words. His characters are usually blue-collar detectives so I guess it makes sense...
His most famous line is probably this one
"There are days when I get up in the morning and stagger into the bathroom and begin running water and then I look up and I don't even recognize my own toothbrush in the mirror"
I really liked this one from Gun
"A waitress finally looked at her map somewhere and figured out we were on it. She bent low over the table and asked if we wanted anything"

Highly Recommended: Brunch at Dressler

Amazing poached eggs, eggs benedict, pork belly tacos and crab cake sandwiches
If this place was in Manhattan it would be insanely crowded. Thankfully it is in South Williamsburg. Unfortunately brunch is only available on Sundays

Traffic in New York
http://www.marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2010/08/parking-fact-of-the-day.html
Wow, almost half the traffic in my neighborhood is coming from people looking for parking? WEAK
"In a recent survey conducted by Bruce Schaller in the SoHo district in Manhattan, 28 percent of drivers interviewed while they were stopped at traffic lights said they were searching for curb parking. A similar study conducted by Transportation Alternatives in the Park Slope neighborhood in Brooklyn found that 45 percent of drivers were cruising."

Snooki
http://www.observer.com/2010/culture/pricey-landscaping
"Allegedly, the anxious folks at these various luxury houses are all aggressively gifting our gal Snookums with free bags. No surprise, right? But here's the shocker: They are not sending her their own bags. They are sending her each other's bags! Competitors' bags!
Call it what you will — "preemptive product placement"? "unbranding"? — either way, it's brilliant, and it makes total sense. As much as one might adore Miss Snickerdoodle, her ability to inspire dress-alikes among her fans is questionable. The bottom line? Nobody in fashion wants to co-brand with Snooki."
