I am a big fan of Jonathan Lethem (probably it is that whole Brooklyn thing). I really enjoyed Motherless Brooklyn, Chronic City and Fortress of Solitude so now I am reading Gun, With Occasional Music
Something I noticed is how infrequently he uses "SAT" words. His characters are usually blue-collar detectives so I guess it makes sense...
His most famous line is probably this one
"There are days when I get up in the morning and stagger into the bathroom and begin running water and then I look up and I don't even recognize my own toothbrush in the mirror"
I really liked this one from Gun
"A waitress finally looked at her map somewhere and figured out we were on it. She bent low over the table and asked if we wanted anything"

Highly Recommended: Brunch at Dressler
http://www.dresslernyc.com
Amazing poached eggs, eggs benedict, pork belly tacos and crab cake sandwiches
If this place was in Manhattan it would be insanely crowded. Thankfully it is in South Williamsburg. Unfortunately brunch is only available on Sundays

Traffic in New York
http://www.marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2010/08/parking-fact-of-the-day.html
Wow, almost half the traffic in my neighborhood is coming from people looking for parking? WEAK
"In a recent survey conducted by Bruce Schaller in the SoHo district in Manhattan, 28 percent of drivers interviewed while they were stopped at traffic lights said they were searching for curb parking. A similar study conducted by Transportation Alternatives in the Park Slope neighborhood in Brooklyn found that 45 percent of drivers were cruising."

Snooki
http://www.observer.com/2010/culture/pricey-landscaping
"Allegedly, the anxious folks at these various luxury houses are all aggressively gifting our gal Snookums with free bags. No surprise, right? But here's the shocker: They are not sending her their own bags. They are sending her each other's bags! Competitors' bags!
Call it what you will — "preemptive product placement"? "unbranding"? — either way, it's brilliant, and it makes total sense. As much as one might adore Miss Snickerdoodle, her ability to inspire dress-alikes among her fans is questionable. The bottom line? Nobody in fashion wants to co-brand with Snooki."

Douche Bags
Lately I hear people calling other people “douche bag” quite often. It seems to have become interchangeable with pretty much anything negative (idiot, annoying, pretentious, snob, etc.).
2 definitions from urban dictionary below
“An individual who has an over-inflated sense of self worth, compounded by a low level of intellegence, behaving ridiculously in front of colleagues with no sense of how moronic he appears.”
“A douchebag is a pretentious, sugar coated prick, but with emphasis on pretentious and sugar coated. It's not an adjective for an asshole, because assholes call other people douchebags, and assholes are more often than not proud of being assholes.”
I believe it is more like the first definition and less like the second.
In my opinion, a douche bag is a person who ranks/evaluates other people based on some arbitrary, unfair criteria and treats those at the bottom of the ranking worse than those at the top of the ranking.
In New York , and in most US cities, this typically involves ranking others based on their net worth since we are such a materialistic/capitalistic society. This is why the finance community is so often seen as douche bags, because that industry tends to put great emphasis on how much money you make.
Note, however, that recently, this criteria has expanded, and it doesn’t just have to be about money. The most common other type of douche (besides finance douche) seems to be the hipster douche (I just refer to them as hipsters though). The hipster ranks/evaluates others based on some arbitrary criteria like your nutrition (vegan?), profession, facial hair, etc.
What do both of these douches have in common? They judge people based on something pretty arbitrary that has nothing to do with who you are as a human being. There are plenty of bad vegans and there are plenty of bad rich people. Also, just because a person ranks low in your arbitrary ranking system doesn’t mean that you should treat them poorly.
Some examples of douchey behavior:
Treating a waiter poorly because he/she is just a waiter and you are a VP at Goldman Sachs.
Attacking someone’s profession as being a “leech on society” without really understanding what they do.
While in college, obsessing over who got what internship at which bulge bracket investment bank.
Referring to dinners you setup as “winners only”.
Questionably douchey behavior:
Popping your collar. This tends to be something the high net-worth community does (think preppy WASPs in the Hamptons ) which is why people associate it with douche bags.
Being an attention whore. Basically this is just another form of name dropping. Why do you wear a mustache or a beard? To show people that you are in a field that allows it (often a creative field). Why do you wear a Lacoste polo? To show people that you make money. Doesn’t mean you are actually a douche…
Gossiping. If you get together with your friends and constantly gossip about who just got promoted at what hedge fund or who just got a book on Foucault published, that is pretty douchy. If you are obsessed with what other people are doing, you are probably a douche.
NOT douchy behavior:
Working at a hedge fund. Just because you make a ton of money, doesn’t make you a douche bag. It is all in the way you worship the wealthy or mistreat the less wealthy.
Adopting kids and enrolling them in some hippie, alternative private school. If you were to criticize your friends for not doing the same, then you are a douche bag.
Being pretentious/snobby. So you only eat organic foods and watch foreign films? That doesn’t make you a douche bag. If you think people who don’t eat organic foods and watch hollywoold films are all idiots, then you are a douche bag.
Dressed like a douche:
You are on the street, you see a guy wearing a fedora with skinny jeans and a silk vest on a t-shirt. You say “what a douche”. What you are actually saying is “that guy is probably a douche”. In my opinion, you won’t really know unless you talk to him. That is why clothing will never make someone douchy just by itself. It is just a strong signaling device.
The difference between a bouncer and a college admission officer:
If I was to ask you, which profession is more douchy, I assume you’d say the bouncer. That is because the bouncer evaluates/ranks people based on something pretty arbitrary (looks, clothes, ability to buy bottles) while the college admissions officer actually takes the time to read your essays, recommendations, etc. It isn’t about evaluating people, it’s about evaluating them unfairly and then treating people differently based on that unfair criteria.

Catching a Mouse
I have a little mouse in my apartment, so I set down some sticky pads.
Girlfriend: "It's so obvious. If I was mouse, I would just laugh at these traps."

Hipster Trendspotting
So you want to be a hipster, but unfortunately you live in Midtown West and can't get all the latest from Williamsburg (BK, not VA)
Well fear not, I am here to be your guide
TREND 1: The Tie-Dye Shirt
Celebrity Hipster Representative: Sufjan Stevens, Dov Charney
Chances of Catching on (out of 10): 4
Commentary: After spotting these shirts on the front page of the American Apparel website and then at the Kutsher's gift shop during the ATP music festival, I thought maybe I was on to something. Unfortunately, if there's one thing hipsters hate more than construction on the L-train, it's being confused with a hippy.
Potential Derivative: Those Hypercolor t-shirts from the 80's
Have I Jumped on the Bandwagon?: No, unless you count the time I made a tie-dye shirt in 3rd grade
TREND 2: The Reverse Wristwatch
Celebrity Hipster Representative: Jason Schwartzman
Chances of Catching on (out of 10): 5
Commentary: I discovered HBO on-demand on my girlfriend's TV today and watched 4 episodes of "Bored to Death". Jason, for some reason, always wears his watch like in the picture above. Even weirder, I found the picture above from a website called FutureOfAds which I initially thought was FutureOFads (pure serendipity!). Unfortunately for this one, most hipsters get their Flight of the Conchords and other HBO shows off BitTorrent, and I'm just not sure you can actually catch this trend on your tiny Macbook Air computer screen.
Potential Derivative: A pocket watch chained to your skinny jeans
Have I Jumped on the Bandwagon?: No (see below)
[During surfing lesson]
Paul Rudd: "When I came to Hawaii, I stopped wearing a watch."
Jason Segel: "That's so cool."
Paul Rudd: "Well now I have a clock on my cell phone"
TREND 3: Nudity
Celebrity Hipster Representative: Maybe that guy from Deerhunter? (the band, not movie)
Chances of Catching on (out of 10): 0
Commentary: I'm not sure this one even qualifies, but streakers have been spotted in Williamsburg lately.
Potential Derivative: Streaking with a body suit George Costanza style
Have I Jumped on the Bandwagon?: No, but I am tempted
TREND 4: Animal T-Shirts
Celebrity Hipster Representative: Bret McKenzie
Chances of Catching on (out of 10): 9
Commentary: Animals are so "in" right now. Just look at the names of these indie rock bands: Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Deerhunter, Deerhoof, Caribou Vibration Ensemble, Super Furry Animals, The Jesus Lizard, Bridezilla... and these were just the bands at ATP Festival!
Potential Derivative: Dressing up in an animal costume
Have I Jumped on the Bandwagon?: Most definitely
TREND 5: Hipster Trendspotting
Celebrity Hipster Representative: Demetri Martin
Chances of Catching on (out of 10): 6
Commentary: If there's one thing hipster's love, it's NOT conforming to the mainstream while conforming to hipster culture (see: skinny jeans, mustaches, flannel, living in Williamsburg). Well how do you know how to conform to hipster culture so that when you go to that Grizzly Bear concert, people won't yell "BOO TEXAS!!" at you for wearing a Texas Longhorns t-shirt... what's wrong with these people? don't they know it's gameday? Would it kill them to turn on the TV at the bar to show the USC/Ohio St game??!
Potential Derivative: Setting your own trends instead of copying other people
Have I Jumped on the Bandwagon?: See title of this post
And now here is my list of things I wish hipsters would embrace in no particular order: the red river shootout, meat, glow-in-the-dark undergarments, hedge funds, midtown west, fu manchu mustache, LFO, the BCS, survivor (the show, not the band), croquet, me
