Gates

A gating war has broken out inside Paige Capital, a hedge fund run by two sisters who appear to only manage the money of one outside investor.

The sisters are aggressively gating his money, sending him an.. intimidating(?) letter that says:

“[W]e are fully prepared to litigate this matter to the bitter end because we will continue to manage your money, and collect management and incentive fees, until this matter is resolved many years hence." Christopher Paige, Paige Capital’s general counsel, defiantly wrote in a March letter, court filings show. “You cannot win because you will spend more litigating than we’re fighting over … we decide the best way to protect the funds, and your opinion is irrelevant.”

The Wire

Congrats David Simon!

David Simon has been awarded one of the MacArthur Foundation's $500,000 “genius grants,” along with 22 others, including an astrophysicist, a stone carver, jellyfish and bee experts, and the fiction writer Yiyun Li, one of The New Yorker’s "20 Under 40." The Wire creator received the award in his typical fashion, which is to say with some self-deprecation, appreciation, and a hint of curmudgeonliness: ”Obviously, I’m very grateful but I have a vague sense of not belonging,” he told the Times. He elaborated to The Wall Street Journal: "To be blunt, I'm in the entertainment industry … and my contracts are well-funded right now." [WSJ]

London Hedge Fund Tax

A whopping one in four hedge funds have left London because of the 50% bonus tax, or coincidentally since the tax was instituted.

Brevan Howard, Moore Capital, and Michael Platt's BlueCrest are the biggest fund names to leave for more profittable pastures in Switzerland, but clearly they are three of many. And losing them is costing the city tons of money and pride - their tax is totally backfiring. At some point they're going to break even, if they haven't already.

We predicted the loss in taxes for London was up to £400 million in July, based on the city losing taxes on hedge fund employees' incomes alone.
Now the Financial Times is estimating the city is losing up to £500 million annually. Oof.

Apparently they have 2 offensive coordinators. Texas, DO IT!!

Tech Conference

How is Chamillionaire not the spokesperson for GEICO yet?

On another note:

"The biggest tech thing rappers know is Napster ... That's why I'm so adamant about letting people know why I'm [at tech conferences]. There's a whole audience of people that are influencers that people aren't seeing here." —Rapper Chamillionaire at TechCrunch's Disrupt conference, criticizing the dearth of rappers at these types of events. Chamillionaire, who pointed out that most rap fans use torrents instead of iTunes, urged his compatriots to keep up with where the market is heading, adding "If my ship is about to sink, I need my lifeline ahead of time. The artists, they don't know." [Business Insider]

Play to Win Championships

Usually in football, it's all about winning championships. No one really cares about 2nd place. I would say that the Buffalo Bills are the exception to this, as everyone remembers and appreciates their 4 in a row 2nd place finishes. I would say that I remember that even more than some Super Bowl winners (Tampa, Baltimore, Green Bay)

On another note, check out Jared Allen's cookbook. Awesome!
